Klangkunst / Sounddesign

Pulsar-Sounddesigner John Bowen, Theo Moebus ...

Synthesizer-Design by Theo Moebus

Message 17278:

Someone uploaded something cool to the planetZ device page.

Yes it's free.

No I'm not gonna tell you what it is.

:o)

Message 17281:

I will though:

---------------
Uknow v1.12
an altered version of the original Uknow only this one sounds much fatter.

Unloaded by ???@???

Anyone know who's behind this mayhem?? :)

Message 17283:

Any idea why the originator doesn't want to reveal his identity?
(i.o.w.: can a .dev file contain a virus?)

Message 17286:

Awwww... you spoilt all the fun :o)

Heh no unfortunately I don't know who made this thing.

I know the guy who uploaded it (who wishes to stay anonymous) but he doesn't know where it originates from...

Message 17289:

LOL theres nothing malicious in the device.
Except an evil level of phatness. :o)

Message 17292:

Hmm, this is getting very strange. I cant judge if there's a copyright violation going on here but I certainly don't like this anonymous bullshit. So either you reveil your sources or I'll ask john cooper to remove the device from planetz. And I won't hesitate to ban anyone from this list who cooperates with any illegal action.

Any comment from a CW rep on the copyright issue would be more than welcome. If it turns out to be legal to alter a Uknow and put it up on PlanetZ I rest my case.

Message 17295:

Erik,

As far as I know there's nothing illegal going on...

In any case I'll get clarification and get back to ya.

This has nothing to do with me... I knew of the upload and reported it, that's all.

Message 17308:

I think that this copyright issue is a non-issue.

- The UKnow is itself a copy of a very known synth.
- ??? is not doing any business, the device is free.
- This person must be someone working with (more or less) Creamware otherwise it would say his name.
- This act does not hurt Creamware because the UKnow is in almost all the Soundcards.

In another way it is another free device for all, so leave this ??? guy in peace please :)

Message 17313:

Just because it doesn't hurt anyone and nobody is making money out of it doesn't make it legal!

Andrew Campbell

Message 17314:

no, but it makes it less likely to be illegal.. and if it doesn't hurt anyone and nobody is making money then it probably should have no reason to be illegal in the first place. after all, things are made illegal because they hurt other people..

Message 17317:

hello,
maybe it come from here (old link...)
http://www.moebus.de/pulsar/pulsar_download.htm

best regards,
<huicholity>

Message 17320:

There ya go...

I can't read German but the device seems to be downloadable for free. I certainly didn't know about this Moebus page, so this dude's upload to PlanetZ certainly helped me out...

Perhaps its technically illegal to upload this device to PlanetZ, but well... I think far more shocking things have happened than this.

So anyway now's the time to drop the thread and go and do something useful. Has anyone actually checked out the device?
ehhhehe.

Message 17321:

Hi everybody
When loading the new device presets into the regular Uknow the sound is exactly the same some this is not really a new device, it's just the same but with new (and I have to say really good) presets. To create this kind of device just everybody that owns a pulsar can do it!! Sometimes things are simpler of what they look :-)

Message 17323:

It's not illegal, I just checked it.
I know this device and the guy who made it. Theo Moebus is a german sounddesigner. He didn't alter the device, he just programmed some presets and saved the device with the presets stored.

AFAIK he did this, because with one update Creamware altered the paramter scaling of Uknow a little bit and his presets didn't sound the same anymore. So he took the old device with his presets and saved it, so that people who used those sounds could get them back in their original incarnation.

Message 17324:

Well, speaking strictly about the "quality" of the device, that version U Know is pure badass! This is much closer to the actual Juno 106. I was lost playing with this thing for hours last night.

Here comes the disclaimer: I hope the device is legit. If so, it's a win / win situation for everyone. If not, well, you know the implications. It's not good to have developers get screwed, especially since the Pulsar-Scope community is relatively small.

Message 17331:

Folks, this "phatt" version of Uknow is a fraud, a hoax, a sham. I exported the preset list of the regular Uknow synth, loaded up the same presets in both versions, and did an A-B comparison. There is virtually no difference in the sound. I believe this ??? guy just stole the Uknow code, stuck on some "phatt" boosting EQ or something that his specific presets use (and that we users don't have access to), and released it to the public. I don't think there's any fundamental difference in the sound at all, so I question this guy's motives for releasing this. I suggest you all try what I did and see if you agree.

Meanwhile, I'll be using original products that I bought with my hard-earned moeny, such as the Orion Custom from Zarg Music. Now THAT'S what I'd call a PHATT synth! :)

Regards,

Jared

Message 17338:

Again: I know Theo Moebus, the guy who did it, personally and he never had a Scope. He didn't steal code or put some EQ in because he simply woldn't even know how to do that. All he did were some presets for the first release of Uknow. With the Pulsar 1.2 update it looked like Creamware altered Uknow a tiny bit and the presets didn't sound the same. Some users kept bothering Theo and he took the 1.1 Uknow and saved it with his presets.

And what you hear is no EQ, just good sounddesign in terms of knowing how to turn the knobs and use the sliders.

Message 17356:

Hi, Rainer & all,

OK, I sent out my original message before your first posting came through -- so even though it looked like I sent it AFTER all these other messages were sent, I didn't. So I wasn't being stupid or anything -- except for the fact that I was completely off-base, of course. I still think it's kinda weird to put up a higher version number device claiming fatness when it's just an old version of the device with some presets attached, but, oh well....

Anyhow, sorry for the confusion, and I hope you all have a great day.

Take care,

Jared

Message 17381:

Well, seems that we all are a little "piracy paranoid" and not without reason.

Having said that, it should be noted that the 1.12 seems the product of someone who knows synthesis, and how to tweak the parameters to get those phatt sounds. I know that I played with the sliders and knobs and never got that type of sound quality, but I'm a novice, still trying to wrap my head around synthesis.

Suffice it to say, that I consider myself lucky to be part of this community, where some make free devices, and others make some deep and beautiful presets or modular patches.

So, nothing but respect to Theo Moebus. The fact that everyone, including myself, was like "hey, how did he make those sounds?" is a true testament to the quality of the presets. Nice one...
